Okay, not that great. First time visit tonight. My wife came here a few months ago and had poor service; she refused to come with us tonight. So I just came with my daughter. We sat on the sushi side (not the hibachi side). I ordered sushi rolls. My daughter ordered hibachi. The food was okay. It arrived very quickly but I wasn't impressed by the quality. I guess I'm spoiled because I just ate at Masu and Origami last week. Technically, the service was good. But it wasn't very friendly. In fact, it seemed curt and cold. It felt like they just want to turn the tables as quickly as possible. All the action seemed to be on the hibachi side...lots of noise, loud talking and bad jokes. It sounded like a zoo. Finally, I felt like it was over priced for what you get. The hibachi especially seemed to be overpriced considering the small portions and the mediocre quality. I love going to Osaka for the hibachi grilled food. We almost always get the "Lover's Dinner for Two" with Filet Mignon, Lobster, Scallop & Shrimp. It is always prepared perfectly, it's fun to watch the chef do cool tricks as he cooks, its dinner and a show. That being said i didn't care for their spicy salmon sushi roll, we ordered it as an appetizer, it seemed to me a just little less fresh than I'm used too. So to sum it up, the hibachi is wonderful, personally I would go elsewhere for sushi, 4 stars hibachi - 2 stars sushi

If I had to sum up Osaka in a few words, it's a generic Benihana. I have been to Benihana a number of times before coming here and my eating experience here was remarkably similar. I ordered the Hibachi shrimp which is what I usually get at Benihana. The salad, the soup, the shrimp, the shrimp sauce & even the chef were all pretty much just like Benihana. When I say generic Benihana, it's actually closer to Benihana than I would have ever guessed it to be looking at the restaurant from the outside. I also don't mean that as a knock to Osaka because the food was actually rather good if not on par with the Hibachi shrimp Behnihana has. The atmosphere isn't quite as nice as Benihana and the lightning is a little dim but the shrimp was fantastic which the reason you come here is to eat. The staff and chef was also very friendly and put on a little show when the food was being made in front of you. I would certainly return again especially if you live on the north side of the river as it will save you some drive time over Benihana in Maple Grove. Overall I was more impressed than I thought I would be and will return again. If you like Benihana, make an effort to give Osaka a try! Make sure whatever you decide to order you get a side of fried rice because it's awesome!

Order: Bacon Wrapped shrimp, Sumo roll, Sweet potato roll, Crunchy roll, Lemon drop drink. Service: horrible, there was a serious language barrier and she did not know what she was doing. I at too "wave down" a passing waitress to get service. Bacon wrapped shrimp was not good. Half cooked bacon wrapped in an overcooked shrimp. Garnished with PRINGLES! Yes, a "high class" restaurant based on there high prices garnishes dishes with Pringles (cheap potato chip). The other sushi rolls have no flavor, I can't honestly call this good sushi. It's just fish drowned in spicy mayo! On the plus side the Lemon drop beverage was awesome! Skip this place!

They sure are proud of their limp zucchini and small, salty portions. It is the kind of place that would impress a pre-teen. In fact, we were there for a pre-teen's birthday dinner. I won't be back. So many better options for a)steak b)seafood c) sushi that aren't trying to accomplish all three while putting on a dinner theatre at the same time. I Was sexually harassed all throughout dinner from our chef in april of this year...told manager.they said they may be able to give us a free appetizer...and said that the chef said "sorry"and he wouldnt do it again!! Not only that...but my response from osakas email said he has been told many times not to talk to customers like that!!! Pretty much said he will not work at THAT location anymore! I spent $120 on dinner..no refund..nothing..not only was dinner uncomfortable and unprofessional..but most off all NOT impressed with how management delt with issue and feel that sexual harassment is OK and tolerated at osaka!

This is my go-to sushi place whether I'm eating in or taking out. The food is great, they don't water down their soy sauce and there is just something amazing about their miso soup. I feel just as comfortable at a table full of my friends as I do when I've come to enjoy a quiet lunch at the sushi bar by myself. Make sure to tip the sushi chef and a lot of the time they will make you a creative, delicious surprise (that doesn't show up on your tab).

What a fun time! Been to the Hibachi a few times and always have fun. The meal comes with a soup, salad, fried rice, shrimp and then whatever meat or veggie you order (steak, chicken, vegetables..) Plus the most important part, a show! Great for a special occasion. Also a sushi bar and normal sit down restaurant area and menu if you aren't feeling like the whole hibachi experience.

This place is great! Huge selection of specialty rolls, I got the winter roll which was amazing and the spicy tuna roll. The hot sake is alright... a little vinegary. Staff was very friendly, I sat at the sushi bar and got avocado covered slices of seared tuna as an appetizer on the house, very nice. Not a whole lot of interaction with the sushi chef but he was polite and answered my questions well enough. It was pretty empty on a Sunday afternoon so I got enough attention from the waiter, can't comment on how the staff is during a Friday or Saturday night though.

Giving this one a weak 2 stars, since the fish was fresh, at least, and the sushi chef was friendly. Pros: - they've got a groupon that's pretty reasonable (if you want to go to Coon Rapids - we didn't realize it was limited to that location until after the purchase, so we made the road trip from the south metro) - the fish was fresh and the rolls were tasty, although they were a little on the sloppy side - the sushi chefs were friendly and polite (although I'm accustomed to a bit more interaction with the chef when sitting right at the bar) - what I could see of the teppanyaki chefs looked like good showmanship, and there were lots of oohs and aahs coming from that side of the restaurant, so perhaps that's the better choice if you come here. Cons: - General service issues - I called in advance to book a reservation and specifically said we were coming for sushi, not teppanyaki. However, the hostess seemed to miss that entirely and didn't want to seat us because the teppanyaki side was busy. When we clarified that we just wanted sushi, preferably at the sushi bar (which had several seats available), we waited a bit until we realized we were being blown off and seated ourselves. The waiter was hustling around, and a tad brusque, so we never got our water until reminding him about half an hour later. We ordered all of our food, including appetizers through the sushi chef. - fake crab should NEVER be served at any respectable sushi bar, ESPECIALLY on the sashimi plate! sashimi = raw fish, at least in my book. - we wanted to order sake but apparently they don't serve it outside the bar. Liquor license issues? in any case, annoying. Bottom line, if there's no place else to go for sushi in the neighborhood, it's passable, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Sorry folks.

Decided to try this place because of a gift certificate that was given to me. We showed up at 4, the 'open' sign was lit and was greeted immediately with a "WE DON'T OPEN UNTIL 4:30". Ok, so we left and ran an errand. Came back and entered at 4:28. "WE DON'T OPEN UNTIL 4:30" Really, 2 minutes? We went outside and came back in to a very friendly, smiley hostess who greeted us and asked if we were doing hibachi or sushi. We said "hibachi". She grabbed 2 menus and was immediately yelled at by who I assumed was the manager. Not just once but 3 times. The manager was frustrated because she was grabbing the wrong menu. We got seated, at the end of the table and we were obviously going to be the only 2 people sitting at this table usually fit for 10. We wondered if we could move and when our chef came out- he advised us to move. Our Chef, Chris (I believe was his name) is the ONLY reason I didn't rate this establishment 1 star. The chefs at hibachi grills are usually hit or miss, but he was good. He educated us, made us laugh and prepared our order perfectly. Personally, I wouldn't eat at this particular location again because of our first impression when we walked in (both times). But I'd recommend a different location because the food was delicious.

Great rolls. When at hibachi beware of the sake shots...they are potent. For sushi and esp for sushi in the NW suburbs this place is the shiz nit. Hibachi is really fun and actually quite reasonable in price. Tons and tons of food. 2 people could easily share one hibachi plate and depending on the appetites of the 2 could possibly take some home. The sushi is actually quite impressive. Nigiri slices could be a little thicker but the price is reasonable and the fish is good. Love the rolls. Again reasonably priced and creative. Love creative rolls. If I can't afford/make it downtown for sushi this is def. a great alternative to a super swanky super expensive place. Don't hate on the CR. Give this place a try. You won't be sorry.

Basic hibachi layout here is soup salad and your selection (includes white or fried rice). Soup and salad are definately average at best. Servers are pretty good and jovial.
Not impressed with this place at all. Spend the extra $ and go to Ichiban. I was here with my family for my brothers birthday & was not crazy about the service. I got food poisoning from the food and made every attempt to let them rectify the situation and they did not. I won't be going back here.

The sushi was absolutely fantastic! We had the shrimp tempura roll, the lobster & avo roll, & the king crab & avo roll - all delicious!!! We also ordered entrees as well. I had the shrimp tempura meal & my bf had the yaki udon noodles. The shrimp tempura was awesome, and the udon was just "ok." The service was a little slow, but then again it was a very busy Saturday night. We would definitely go back!!!

First time visiting here a few weekends ago. The teppenyaki was good, lacked in veggies, but the steak was amazing! The soup and salad were the best I've had judging from similar places. The fried rice had egg shells in it, not too appetizing to say the least. Really good sauces and a nice change to get noodles in addition to rice. I gave it 2 stars because every five minutes they played an obnoxious poorly recorded version of "Happy Birthday" with disco lights and drums. I felt like I was on a bad acid trip at a rave. They sat us, but we had to wait until more people came in to fill up the table. It was very loud and rather dirty. We wanted to order swordfish, but they don't have it on the weekends and won't do a side order, we'd have to order a whole other meal, really?!?!? I would go back, but only for take out, the atmosphere felt like an Asian Chucky Cheese, without the games. It's the closest restaurant of this kind in the area and the prices are slightly cheaper than similar places, but I don't recommend going there looking for a quiet date or if you want to hold a conversation.

We ended up here on their opening night back in Feb of 2009 I believe. We have added it to our repertoire of restaurants to choose from whenever we want to go out to dinner (we don't go out too often, maybe once or twice a month, since we do enjoy eating home cooked meals). There are only about 3 restaurants on our short list, and this is one of them. I do like their yum yum sauce (shrimp sauce), but I like Benihana's shrimp sauce a teeny bit better. I like their rice, and they have plenty of food for us to eat. Usually my husband gets sushi and a side order of fried rice, and I get the meal, and we share the noodles, veggies, etc. We have been to the Osaka's in Bloomington and also the one near Northtown. This has been the one we go to most often since we live closer. Opening weekend was a hoot -- it took us 3 hours for our meal. We never got our salad, and they never brought out our appetizer. We understood that things rarely run smoothly, and we were in good company so we took it in stride. A few times since then, they have seemed disorganized, and we have had to wait to sit down sometimes. But overall, we enjoy the food. And if you go around 9pm on a weekend night, be careful! They start to get carried away with their tricks! I got a raw egg thrown at me!! :)

The space is dirty and tired, the staff is untrained, unprofessional and inept. After a 45 minute wait for a 6:30 reservation, the snippy hostess told me they didn't take reservations. What?? Why did you take the reservation on the phone, why didn't you say something when I checked in or the 3 other times I checked back?? We didn't stay. Ordered great pizzas from Papa Johns and ate at home.

Excellent sushi, high quality fish and veggies, full bar, awesome fried ice cream! This is one of those gems in the rough... There probably aren't any sushi restaurants worth snipping a chop stick at in Coon Rapids, but being in the mood we decided we'd give this new place a try. I was very impressed right from the beginning. The restaurant is very clean and the service is warm and fast. We had a squid appetizer (Squid Ginger Yaki) which came out as an identifiable animal. The dish was very tasty, especially for not being breaded, and it came with a plum-like ginger sauce. I'd recommend this unique appetizer to anyone. We got a few different premium rolls (Angel Roll and one other) and one regular roll (the Alaska). All the rolls were very good with no fishy tastes about them at all. I noticed this restaurant uses a lot of traditional japanese vegetables that many restuarants don't use. This provided some new flavors in the rolls that I hadn't experienced before. Also, it's so rare nowadays to find a sushi restaurant with a full bar. My wife got a French Martini and was very happy, so going by that it seems like they at least have a competent bartender... soo rare at sushi restaurants We didn't go to the Hibachi area but there was a lot of cheering, clapping and what sounded like an overall good time. I'm 99.9% sure we'll come back to this place, and you should too!

Great hibachi grill. A lot like Benni Hana but with better food and a lack of pretentiousness. The only complaint that I can muster is that they don't have a ton of waiting room when they're busy; it was literally wall to wall people when we walked in (and it was too cold to wait outside). It was a typical hibachi menu.....soup and salad to start followed by fried rice and the main course. We ordered some veggie sushi and some vegetable dumplings as well and both were great. The soup and salad were along the lines of other hibachi grills (broth based soup and small salad with a creamy dressing) but for some reason both tasted much better than I've had at similar restaurants. The fried rice and main course (veggie hibachi for me) were both excellent as well. Our chef was amusing (as were other chefs around us) with some new tricks that I haven't seen before. Our waitress was very attentive and was doing her best to keep up with the crowd. Overall it was a great experience and I will be going back again soon!

I would like to point out that many of the people that have reviwed Osaka at this location mistakenly placed their review under the other Coon Rapids location that is located at 77 85th Ave NW. Both locations are excelent choices but have a slight personal preference for the Riverdale Blvd location. I never have been one to dine out much but have doing much more of it over the past 6 months and one thing I am learning is just how important it is to the dining experence for a restaurant to have a good and friendly staff. Both of the Coon Rapids locations do an excelent job of making me feel wecome. The food is an excelent value and is prepared quite well even though it falls a little short of my expectations when comparing it to Japanese food I have eaten elswhere, especially my favorite place on the West Coast.

I so wanted this place to have good sushi, since the Coon Rapids location is close to the new house. Unfortunately it was just a little sub-par. The fish on my nigiri orders was fresh-tasting enough, but the Winter Roll tasted pre-made and was noticeably inferior in flavor and size to the same roll at Fuji Ya. Also disappointing was their inability to make 'spicy mayo' with spice. On top of that, I can't believe they get ten bucks for a cheap hot sake out in these parts. I didn't try the hibachi grill, but after seeing and hearing part of the obnoxious, recorded birthday song and light show, I won't be back without a group of children or fans of disco.

I've eaten here at the hibachi/teppenyaki side once, and the sushi side at least 3 times. And we've only lived in Coon Rapids for a month and a half so that should tell you something! It's the only sushi option I know of (so far) in the northern suburbs, and it is really really good. They have nice service, and make beautiful presentations. The food and fish is always high quality and delicious, and they have some fun and unique special rolls. (We recommend Spicy Girl and Winter Roll.) The hibachi was great too - good food and a fun show, which is what you're looking for of course. Drinks I've tried have been good (Japanese Sunflower was one I think?) and they have a large sake selection. The price is average to above-average, but come on, you don't want discount sushi in MInnesota anyway. And it depends on what you order, of course. I thought the hibachi prices were less than Ichiban, for example, and seemed to have a similar, if not larger, amount of food. My husband likes eating lots of large specialty rolls, so our sushi bill is probably not a good representation. The only downside is I wish they had more seating that was just sushi. Right now there is a bar, and then about 6 booths. Seems like every time I go here, it is more crowded, so more sushi-only seating would be nice.

This is my go-to sushi place whether I'm eating in or taking out. The food is great, they don't water down their soy sauce and there is just something amazing about their miso soup. I feel just as comfortable at a table full of my friends as I do when I've come to enjoy a quiet lunch at the sushi bar by myself. Make sure to tip the sushi chef and a lot of the time they will make you a creative, delicious surprise (that doesn't show up on your tab).

What a fun time! Been to the Hibachi a few times and always have fun. The meal comes with a soup, salad, fried rice, shrimp and then whatever meat or veggie you order (steak, chicken, vegetables..) Plus the most important part, a show! Great for a special occasion. Also a sushi bar and normal sit down restaurant area and menu if you aren't feeling like the whole hibachi experience.

This place is great! Huge selection of specialty rolls, I got the winter roll which was amazing and the spicy tuna roll. The hot sake is alright... a little vinegary. Staff was very friendly, I sat at the sushi bar and got avocado covered slices of seared tuna as an appetizer on the house, very nice. Not a whole lot of interaction with the sushi chef but he was polite and answered my questions well enough. It was pretty empty on a Sunday afternoon so I got enough attention from the waiter, can't comment on how the staff is during a Friday or Saturday night though.

Pros: - they've got a groupon that's pretty reasonable (if you want to go to Coon Rapids - we didn't realize it was limited to that location until after the purchase, so we made the road trip from the south metro) - the fish was fresh and the rolls were tasty, although they were a little on the sloppy side - the sushi chefs were friendly and polite (although I'm accustomed to a bit more interaction with the chef when sitting right at the bar) - what I could see of the teppanyaki chefs looked like good showmanship, and there were lots of oohs and aahs coming from that side of the restaurant, so perhaps that's the better choice if you come here. Cons: - General service issues - I called in advance to book a reservation and specifically said we were coming for sushi, not teppanyaki. However, the hostess seemed to miss that entirely and didn't want to seat us because the teppanyaki side was busy. When we clarified that we just wanted sushi, preferably at the sushi bar (which had several seats available), we waited a bit until we realized we were being blown off and seated ourselves. The waiter was hustling around, and a tad brusque, so we never got our water until reminding him about half an hour later. We ordered all of our food, including appetizers through the sushi chef. - fake crab should NEVER be served at any respectable sushi bar, ESPECIALLY on the sashimi plate! sashimi = raw fish, at least in my book. - we wanted to order sake but apparently they don't serve it outside the bar. Liquor license issues? in any case, annoying. Bottom line, if there's no place else to go for sushi in the neighborhood, it's passable, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Sorry folks.

The sushi was absolutely fantastic! We had the shrimp tempura roll, the lobster & avo roll, & the king crab & avo roll - all delicious!!! We also ordered entrees as well. I had the shrimp tempura meal & my bf had the yaki udon noodles. The shrimp tempura was awesome, and the udon was just "ok." The service was a little slow, but then again it was a very busy Saturday night. We would definitely go back!!!

Decided to try this place because of a gift certificate that was given to me. We showed up at 4, the 'open' sign was lit and was greeted immediately with a "WE DON'T OPEN UNTIL 4:30". Ok, so we left and ran an errand. Came back and entered at 4:28. "WE DON'T OPEN UNTIL 4:30" Really, 2 minutes? We went outside and came back in to a very friendly, smiley hostess who greeted us and asked if we were doing hibachi or sushi. We said "hibachi". She grabbed 2 menus and was immediately yelled at by who I assumed was the manager. Not just once but 3 times. The manager was frustrated because she was grabbing the wrong menu. We got seated, at the end of the table and we were obviously going to be the only 2 people sitting at this table usually fit for 10. We wondered if we could move and when our chef came out- he advised us to move. Our Chef, Chris (I believe was his name) is the ONLY reason I didn't rate this establishment 1 star. The chefs at hibachi grills are usually hit or miss, but he was good. He educated us, made us laugh and prepared our order perfectly. Personally, I wouldn't eat at this particular location again because of our first impression when we walked in (both times). But I'd recommend a different location because the food was delicious.

Great rolls. When at hibachi beware of the sake shots...they are potent. For sushi and esp for sushi in the NW suburbs this place is the shiz nit. Hibachi is really fun and actually quite reasonable in price. Tons and tons of food. 2 people could easily share one hibachi plate and depending on the appetites of the 2 could possibly take some home. The sushi is actually quite impressive. Nigiri slices could be a little thicker but the price is reasonable and the fish is good. Love the rolls. Again reasonably priced and creative. Love creative rolls. If I can't afford/make it downtown for sushi this is def. a great alternative to a super swanky super expensive place. Don't hate on the CR. Give this place a try. You won't be sorry.

Not impressed with this place at all. Spend the extra $ and go to Ichiban. I was here with my family for my brothers birthday & was not crazy about the service. I got food poisoning from the food and made every attempt to let them rectify the situation and they did not. I won't be going back here.

First time visiting here a few weekends ago. The teppenyaki was good, lacked in veggies, but the steak was amazing! The soup and salad were the best I've had judging from similar places. The fried rice had egg shells in it, not too appetizing to say the least. Really good sauces and a nice change to get noodles in addition to rice. I gave it 2 stars because every five minutes they played an obnoxious poorly recorded version of "Happy Birthday" with disco lights and drums. I felt like I was on a bad acid trip at a rave. They sat us, but we had to wait until more people came in to fill up the table. It was very loud and rather dirty. We wanted to order swordfish, but they don't have it on the weekends and won't do a side order, we'd have to order a whole other meal, really?!?!? I would go back, but only for take out, the atmosphere felt like an Asian Chucky Cheese, without the games. It's the closest restaurant of this kind in the area and the prices are slightly cheaper than similar places, but I don't recommend going there looking for a quiet date or if you want to hold a conversation.

We ended up here on their opening night back in Feb of 2009 I believe. We have added it to our repertoire of restaurants to choose from whenever we want to go out to dinner (we don't go out too often, maybe once or twice a month, since we do enjoy eating home cooked meals). There are only about 3 restaurants on our short list, and this is one of them. I do like their yum yum sauce (shrimp sauce), but I like Benihana's shrimp sauce a teeny bit better. I like their rice, and they have plenty of food for us to eat. Usually my husband gets sushi and a side order of fried rice, and I get the meal, and we share the noodles, veggies, etc. We have been to the Osaka's in Bloomington and also the one near Northtown. This has been the one we go to most often since we live closer. Opening weekend was a hoot -- it took us 3 hours for our meal. We never got our salad, and they never brought out our appetizer. We understood that things rarely run smoothly, and we were in good company so we took it in stride. A few times since then, they have seemed disorganized, and we have had to wait to sit down sometimes. But overall, we enjoy the food. And if you go around 9pm on a weekend night, be careful! They start to get carried away with their tricks! I got a raw egg thrown at me!! :)

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO EAT AT THIS RESTAURANT! I had eaten at Osaka in Roseville and loved it; great atmosphere, great sushi so made a reservation for 8 in Coon Rapids. The space is dirty and tired, the staff is untrained, unprofessional and inept. After a 45 minute wait for a 6:30 reservation, the snippy hostess told me they didn't take reservations. What?? Why did you take the reservation on the phone, why didn't you say something when I checked in or the 3 other times I checked back?? We didn't stay. Ordered great pizzas from Papa Johns and ate at home.

Excellent sushi, high quality fish and veggies, full bar, awesome fried ice cream! This is one of those gems in the rough... There probably aren't any sushi restaurants worth snipping a chop stick at in Coon Rapids, but being in the mood we decided we'd give this new place a try. I was very impressed right from the beginning. The restaurant is very clean and the service is warm and fast. We had a squid appetizer (Squid Ginger Yaki) which came out as an identifiable animal. The dish was very tasty, especially for not being breaded, and it came with a plum-like ginger sauce. I'd recommend this unique appetizer to anyone. We got a few different premium rolls (Angel Roll and one other) and one regular roll (the Alaska). All the rolls were very good with no fishy tastes about them at all. I noticed this restaurant uses a lot of traditional japanese vegetables that many restuarants don't use. This provided some new flavors in the rolls that I hadn't experienced before. Also, it's so rare nowadays to find a sushi restaurant with a full bar. My wife got a French Martini and was very happy, so going by that it seems like they at least have a competent bartender... soo rare at sushi restaurants We didn't go to the Hibachi area but there was a lot of cheering, clapping and what sounded like an overall good time. I'm 99.9% sure we'll come back to this place, and you should too!

Great hibachi grill. A lot like Benni Hana but with better food and a lack of pretentiousness. The only complaint that I can muster is that they don't have a ton of waiting room when they're busy; it was literally wall to wall people when we walked in (and it was too cold to wait outside). It was a typical hibachi menu.....soup and salad to start followed by fried rice and the main course. We ordered some veggie sushi and some vegetable dumplings as well and both were great. The soup and salad were along the lines of other hibachi grills (broth based soup and small salad with a creamy dressing) but for some reason both tasted much better than I've had at similar restaurants. The fried rice and main course (veggie hibachi for me) were both excellent as well. Our chef was amusing (as were other chefs around us) with some new tricks that I haven't seen before. Our waitress was very attentive and was doing her best to keep up with the crowd. Overall it was a great experience and I will be going back again soon!

I would like to point out that many of the people that have reviwed Osaka at this location mistakenly placed their review under the other Coon Rapids location that is located at 77 85th Ave NW. Both locations are excelent choices but have a slight personal preference for the Riverdale Blvd location. I never have been one to dine out much but have doing much more of it over the past 6 months and one thing I am learning is just how important it is to the dining experence for a restaurant to have a good and friendly staff. Both of the Coon Rapids locations do an excelent job of making me feel wecome. The food is an excelent value and is prepared quite well even though it falls a little short of my expectations when comparing it to Japanese food I have eaten elswhere, especially my favorite place on the West Coast.

I so wanted this place to have good sushi, since the Coon Rapids location is close to the new house. Unfortunately it was just a little sub-par. The fish on my nigiri orders was fresh-tasting enough, but the Winter Roll tasted pre-made and was noticeably inferior in flavor and size to the same roll at Fuji Ya. Also disappointing was their inability to make 'spicy mayo' with spice. On top of that, I can't believe they get ten bucks for a cheap hot sake out in these parts. I didn't try the hibachi grill, but after seeing and hearing part of the obnoxious, recorded birthday song and light show, I won't be back without a group of children or fans of disco.

I've eaten here at the hibachi/teppenyaki side once, and the sushi side at least 3 times. And we've only lived in Coon Rapids for a month and a half so that should tell you something! It's the only sushi option I know of (so far) in the northern suburbs, and it is really really good. They have nice service, and make beautiful presentations. The food and fish is always high quality and delicious, and they have some fun and unique special rolls. (We recommend Spicy Girl and Winter Roll.) The hibachi was great too - good food and a fun show, which is what you're looking for of course. Drinks I've tried have been good (Japanese Sunflower was one I think?) and they have a large sake selection. The price is average to above-average, but come on, you don't want discount sushi in MInnesota anyway. And it depends on what you order, of course. I thought the hibachi prices were less than Ichiban, for example, and seemed to have a similar, if not larger, amount of food. My husband likes eating lots of large specialty rolls, so our sushi bill is probably not a good representation. The only downside is I wish they had more seating that was just sushi. Right now there is a bar, and then about 6 booths. Seems like every time I go here, it is more crowded, so more sushi-only seating would be nice.

We only go in for the Sushi its an easy $120 bucks between me and my husband. The Sushi is actually great! cant speak for the rest of the menu. Okay, not that great. First time visit tonight. My wife came here a few months ago and had poor service; she refused to come with us tonight. So I just came with my daughter. We sat on the sushi side (not the hibachi side). I ordered sushi rolls. My daughter ordered hibachi. The food was okay. It arrived very quickly but I wasn't impressed by the quality. I guess I'm spoiled because I just ate at Masu and Origami last week. Technically, the service was good. But it wasn't very friendly. In fact, it seemed curt and cold. It felt like they just want to turn the tables as quickly as possible. All the action seemed to be on the hibachi side...lots of noise, loud talking and bad jokes. It sounded like a zoo. Finally, I felt like it was over priced for what you get. The hibachi especially seemed to be overpriced considering the small portions and the mediocre quality. I love going to Osaka for the hibachi grilled food. We almost always get the "Lover's Dinner for Two" with Filet Mignon, Lobster, Scallop & Shrimp. It is always prepared perfectly, it's fun to watch the chef do cool tricks as he cooks, its dinner and a show. That being said i didn't care for their spicy salmon sushi roll, we ordered it as an appetizer, it seemed to me a just little less fresh than I'm used too. So to sum it up, the hibachi is wonderful, personally I would go elsewhere for sushi, 4 stars hibachi - 2 stars sushi

If I had to sum up Osaka in a few words, it's a generic Benihana. I have been to Benihana a number of times before coming here and my eating experience here was remarkably similar. I ordered the Hibachi shrimp which is what I usually get at Benihana. The salad, the soup, the shrimp, the shrimp sauce & even the chef were all pretty much just like Benihana. When I say generic Benihana, it's actually closer to Benihana than I would have ever guessed it to be looking at the restaurant from the outside. I also don't mean that as a knock to Osaka because the food was actually rather good if not on par with the Hibachi shrimp Behnihana has. The atmosphere isn't quite as nice as Benihana and the lightning is a little dim but the shrimp was fantastic which the reason you come here is to eat. The staff and chef was also very friendly and put on a little show when the food was being made in front of you. I would certainly return again especially if you live on the north side of the river as it will save you some drive time over Benihana in Maple Grove. Overall I was more impressed than I thought I would be and will return again. If you like Benihana, make an effort to give Osaka a try! Make sure whatever you decide to order you get a side of fried rice because it's awesome!

Order: Bacon Wrapped shrimp, Sumo roll, Sweet potato roll, Crunchy roll, Lemon drop drink. Service: horrible, there was a serious language barrier and she did not know what she was doing. I at too "wave down" a passing waitress to get service. Bacon wrapped shrimp was not good. Half cooked bacon wrapped in an overcooked shrimp. Garnished with PRINGLES! Yes, a "high class" restaurant based on there high prices garnishes dishes with Pringles (cheap potato chip). The other sushi rolls have no flavor, I can't honestly call this good sushi. It's just fish drowned in spicy mayo! On the plus side the Lemon drop beverage was awesome! Skip this place!

They sure are proud of their limp zucchini and small, salty portions. It is the kind of place that would impress a pre-teen. In fact, we were there for a pre-teen's birthday dinner. I won't be back. So many better options for a)steak b)seafood c) sushi that aren't trying to accomplish all three while putting on a dinner theatre at the same time. I could have a had a nice steak and enough wine to forget this debacle for half of what the tab was. Never again. Two stars because it isn't actively offensive enough to only get one. I Was sexually harassed all throughout dinner from our chef in april of this year...told manager.they said they may be able to give us a free appetizer...and said that the chef said "sorry"and he wouldnt do it again!! Not only that...but my response from osakas email said he has been told many times not to talk to customers like that!!! Pretty much said he will not work at THAT location anymore! I spent $120 on dinner..no refund..nothing..not only was dinner uncomfortable and unprofessional..but most off all NOT impressed with how management delt with issue and feel that sexual harassment is OK and tolerated at osaka!

I've been to four different "chef grills at the table" places over the years, and this one was not the best. It is a fun time for the kids. They had a paper mâché head they let people wear for some reason having to do with birthdays (or something). I hate to think of how many drunks and people with head lice must've had it on before my party. Last time I was there, Ichi Ban was a lot better, and it can't be much more expensive.

Not impressed with this place at all. Spend the extra $ and go to Ichiban. I was here with my family for my brothers birthday & was not crazy about the service. I got food poisoning from the food and made every attempt to let them rectify the situation and they did not. I won't be going back here.

The sushi was absolutely fantastic! We had the shrimp tempura roll, the lobster & avo roll, & the king crab & avo roll - all delicious!!! We also ordered entrees as well. I had the shrimp tempura meal & my bf had the yaki udon noodles. The shrimp tempura was awesome, and the udon was just "ok." The service was a little slow, but then again it was a very busy Saturday night. We would definitely go back!!!

First time visiting here a few weekends ago. The teppenyaki was good, lacked in veggies, but the steak was amazing! The soup and salad were the best I've had judging from similar places. The fried rice had egg shells in it, not too appetizing to say the least. Really good sauces and a nice change to get noodles in addition to rice. I gave it 2 stars because every five minutes they played an obnoxious poorly recorded version of "Happy Birthday" with disco lights and drums. I felt like I was on a bad acid trip at a rave. They sat us, but we had to wait until more people came in to fill up the table. It was very loud and rather dirty. We wanted to order swordfish, but they don't have it on the weekends and won't do a side order, we'd have to order a whole other meal, really?!?!? I would go back, but only for take out, the atmosphere felt like an Asian Chucky Cheese, without the games. It's the closest restaurant of this kind in the area and the prices are slightly cheaper than similar places, but I don't recommend going there looking for a quiet date or if you want to hold a conversation.

We ended up here on their opening night back in Feb of 2009 I believe. We have added it to our repertoire of restaurants to choose from whenever we want to go out to dinner (we don't go out too often, maybe once or twice a month, since we do enjoy eating home cooked meals). There are only about 3 restaurants on our short list, and this is one of them. I do like their yum yum sauce (shrimp sauce), but I like Benihana's shrimp sauce a teeny bit better. I like their rice, and they have plenty of food for us to eat. Usually my husband gets sushi and a side order of fried rice, and I get the meal, and we share the noodles, veggies, etc. We have been to the Osaka's in Bloomington and also the one near Northtown. This has been the one we go to most often since we live closer. Opening weekend was a hoot -- it took us 3 hours for our meal. We never got our salad, and they never brought out our appetizer. We understood that things rarely run smoothly, and we were in good company so we took it in stride. A few times since then, they have seemed disorganized, and we have had to wait to sit down sometimes. But overall, we enjoy the food. And if you go around 9pm on a weekend night, be careful! They start to get carried away with their tricks! I got a raw egg thrown at me!! :)

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO EAT AT THIS RESTAURANT! I had eaten at Osaka in Roseville and loved it; great atmosphere, great sushi so made a reservation for 8 in Coon Rapids. The space is dirty and tired, the staff is untrained, unprofessional and inept. After a 45 minute wait for a 6:30 reservation, the snippy hostess told me they didn't take reservations. What?? Why did you take the reservation on the phone, why didn't you say something when I checked in or the 3 other times I checked back?? We didn't stay. Ordered great pizzas from Papa Johns and ate at home.

Excellent sushi, high quality fish and veggies, full bar, awesome fried ice cream! This is one of those gems in the rough... There probably aren't any sushi restaurants worth snipping a chop stick at in Coon Rapids, but being in the mood we decided we'd give this new place a try. I was very impressed right from the beginning. The restaurant is very clean and the service is warm and fast. We had a squid appetizer (Squid Ginger Yaki) which came out as an identifiable animal. The dish was very tasty, especially for not being breaded, and it came with a plum-like ginger sauce. I'd recommend this unique appetizer to anyone. We got a few different premium rolls (Angel Roll and one other) and one regular roll (the Alaska). All the rolls were very good with no fishy tastes about them at all. I noticed this restaurant uses a lot of traditional japanese vegetables that many restuarants don't use. This provided some new flavors in the rolls that I hadn't experienced before. Also, it's so rare nowadays to find a sushi restaurant with a full bar. My wife got a French Martini and was very happy, so going by that it seems like they at least have a competent bartender... soo rare at sushi restaurants We didn't go to the Hibachi area but there was a lot of cheering, clapping and what sounded like an overall good time. I'm 99.9% sure we'll come back to this place, and you should too!

Great hibachi grill. A lot like Benni Hana but with better food and a lack of pretentiousness. The only complaint that I can muster is that they don't have a ton of waiting room when they're busy; it was literally wall to wall people when we walked in (and it was too cold to wait outside). It was a typical hibachi menu.....soup and salad to start followed by fried rice and the main course. We ordered some veggie sushi and some vegetable dumplings as well and both were great. The soup and salad were along the lines of other hibachi grills (broth based soup and small salad with a creamy dressing) but for some reason both tasted much better than I've had at similar restaurants. The fried rice and main course (veggie hibachi for me) were both excellent as well. Our chef was amusing (as were other chefs around us) with some new tricks that I haven't seen before. Our waitress was very attentive and was doing her best to keep up with the crowd. Overall it was a great experience and I will be going back again soon!

I would like to point out that many of the people that have reviwed Osaka at this location mistakenly placed their review under the other Coon Rapids location that is located at 77 85th Ave NW. Both locations are excelent choices but have a slight personal preference for the Riverdale Blvd location. I never have been one to dine out much but have doing much more of it over the past 6 months and one thing I am learning is just how important it is to the dining experence for a restaurant to have a good and friendly staff. Both of the Coon Rapids locations do an excelent job of making me feel wecome. The food is an excelent value and is prepared quite well even though it falls a little short of my expectations when comparing it to Japanese food I have eaten elswhere, especially my favorite place on the West Coast.

I so wanted this place to have good sushi, since the Coon Rapids location is close to the new house. Unfortunately it was just a little sub-par. The fish on my nigiri orders was fresh-tasting enough, but the Winter Roll tasted pre-made and was noticeably inferior in flavor and size to the same roll at Fuji Ya. Also disappointing was their inability to make 'spicy mayo' with spice. On top of that, I can't believe they get ten bucks for a cheap hot sake out in these parts. I didn't try the hibachi grill, but after seeing and hearing part of the obnoxious, recorded birthday song and light show, I won't be back without a group of children or fans of disco.

I've eaten here at the hibachi/teppenyaki side once, and the sushi side at least 3 times. And we've only lived in Coon Rapids for a month and a half so that should tell you something! It's the only sushi option I know of (so far) in the northern suburbs, and it is really really good. They have nice service, and make beautiful presentations. The food and fish is always high quality and delicious, and they have some fun and unique special rolls. (We recommend Spicy Girl and Winter Roll.) The hibachi was great too - good food and a fun show, which is what you're looking for of course. Drinks I've tried have been good (Japanese Sunflower was one I think?) and they have a large sake selection. The price is average to above-average, but come on, you don't want discount sushi in MInnesota anyway. And it depends on what you order, of course. I thought the hibachi prices were less than Ichiban, for example, and seemed to have a similar, if not larger, amount of food. My husband likes eating lots of large specialty rolls, so our sushi bill is probably not a good representation. The only downside is I wish they had more seating that was just sushi. Right now there is a bar, and then about 6 booths. Seems like every time I go here, it is more crowded, so more sushi-only seating would be nice.

We only go in for the Sushi its an easy $120 bucks between me and my husband. The Sushi is actually great! cant speak for the rest of the menu. Only advice to them: It looks as if the place was once an Italian place as they still have the 70's grape vines hanging from the rafters! lol Other then that good food were fans go about once a month! Okay, not that great. First time visit tonight. My wife came here a few months ago and had poor service; she refused to come with us tonight. So I just came with my daughter. We sat on the sushi side (not the hibachi side). I ordered sushi rolls. My daughter ordered hibachi. The food was okay. It arrived very quickly but I wasn't impressed by the quality. I guess I'm spoiled because I just ate at Masu and Origami last week. Technically, the service was good. But it wasn't very friendly. In fact, it seemed curt and cold. It felt like they just want to turn the tables as quickly as possible. All the action seemed to be on the hibachi side...lots of noise, loud talking and bad jokes. It sounded like a zoo. Finally, I felt like it was over priced for what you get. The hibachi especially seemed to be overpriced considering the small portions and the mediocre quality. If I had to sum up Osaka in a few words, it's a generic Benihana. I have been to Benihana a number of times before coming here and my eating experience here was remarkably similar. I ordered the Hibachi shrimp which is what I usually get at Benihana. The salad, the soup, the shrimp, the shrimp sauce & even the chef were all pretty much just like Benihana. When I say generic Benihana, it's actually closer to Benihana than I would have ever guessed it to be looking at the restaurant from the outside. I also don't mean that as a knock to Osaka because the food was actually rather good if not on par with the Hibachi shrimp Behnihana has. The atmosphere isn't quite as nice as Benihana and the lightning is a little dim but the shrimp was fantastic which the reason you come here is to eat. The staff and chef was also very friendly and put on a little show when the food was being made in front of you. I would certainly return again especially if you live on the north side of the river as it will save you some drive time over Benihana in Maple Grove. Overall I was more impressed than I thought I would be and will return again. If you like Benihana, make an effort to give Osaka a try! Make sure whatever you decide to order you get a side of fried rice because it's awesome!

Order: Bacon Wrapped shrimp, Sumo roll, Sweet potato roll, Crunchy roll, Lemon drop drink. Service: horrible, there was a serious language barrier and she did not know what she was doing. I at too "wave down" a passing waitress to get service. Bacon wrapped shrimp was not good. Half cooked bacon wrapped in an overcooked shrimp. Garnished with PRINGLES! Yes, a "high class" restaurant based on there high prices garnishes dishes with Pringles (cheap potato chip). The other sushi rolls have no flavor, I can't honestly call this good sushi. It's just fish drowned in spicy mayo! On the plus side the Lemon drop beverage was awesome! Skip this place!

Mediocre food all cooked with the same one-note sauces lacking any real depth. Bad jokes and worse knife skills from the 'chef'. And the prices. Wow. They sure are proud of their limp zucchini and small, salty portions. It is the kind of place that would impress a pre-teen. In fact, we were there for a pre-teen's birthday dinner. I won't be back. So many better options for a)steak b)seafood c) sushi that aren't trying to accomplish all three while putting on a dinner theatre at the same time. I could have a had a nice steak and enough wine to forget this debacle for half of what the tab was. Never again. Two stars because it isn't actively offensive enough to only get one. But really, think twice.

I love going to Osaka for the hibachi grilled food. We almost always get the "Lover's Dinner for Two" with Filet Mignon, Lobster, Scallop & Shrimp. It is always prepared perfectly, it's fun to watch the chef do cool tricks as he cooks, its dinner and a show. That being said i didn't care for their spicy salmon sushi roll, we ordered it as an appetizer, it seemed to me a just little less fresh than I'm used too. So to sum it up, the hibachi is wonderful, personally I would go elsewhere for sushi, 4 stars hibachi - 2 stars sushi

I Was sexually harassed all throughout dinner from our chef in april of this year...told manager.they said they may be able to give us a free appetizer...and said that the chef said "sorry"and he wouldnt do it again!! Not only that...but my response from osakas email said he has been told many times not to talk to customers like that!!! Pretty much said he will not work at THAT location anymore! I spent $120 on dinner..no refund..nothing..not only was dinner uncomfortable and unprofessional..but most off all NOT impressed with how management delt with issue and feel that sexual harassment is OK and tolerated at osaka!

This is my go-to sushi place whether I'm eating in or taking out. The food is great, they don't water down their soy sauce and there is just something amazing about their miso soup. I feel just as comfortable at a table full of my friends as I do when I've come to enjoy a quiet lunch at the sushi bar by myself. Make sure to tip the sushi chef and a lot of the time they will make you a creative, delicious surprise (that doesn't show up on your tab).

What a fun time! Been to the Hibachi a few times and always have fun. The meal comes with a soup, salad, fried rice, shrimp and then whatever meat or veggie you order (steak, chicken, vegetables..) Plus the most important part, a show! Great for a special occasion. Also a sushi bar and normal sit down restaurant area and menu if you aren't feeling like the whole hibachi experience.

This place is great! Huge selection of specialty rolls, I got the winter roll which was amazing and the spicy tuna roll. The hot sake is alright... a little vinegary. Staff was very friendly, I sat at the sushi bar and got avocado covered slices of seared tuna as an appetizer on the house, very nice. Not a whole lot of interaction with the sushi chef but he was polite and answered my questions well enough. It was pretty empty on a Sunday afternoon so I got enough attention from the waiter, can't comment on how the staff is during a Friday or Saturday night though.

Giving this one a weak 2 stars, since the fish was fresh, at least, and the sushi chef was friendly. Pros: - they've got a groupon that's pretty reasonable (if you want to go to Coon Rapids - we didn't realize it was limited to that location until after the purchase, so we made the road trip from the south metro) - the fish was fresh and the rolls were tasty, although they were a little on the sloppy side - the sushi chefs were friendly and polite (although I'm accustomed to a bit more interaction with the chef when sitting right at the bar) - what I could see of the teppanyaki chefs looked like good showmanship, and there were lots of oohs and aahs coming from that side of the restaurant, so perhaps that's the better choice if you come here. Cons: - General service issues - I called in advance to book a reservation and specifically said we were coming for sushi, not teppanyaki. However, the hostess seemed to miss that entirely and didn't want to seat us because the teppanyaki side was busy. When we clarified that we just wanted sushi, preferably at the sushi bar (which had several seats available), we waited a bit until we realized we were being blown off and seated ourselves. The waiter was hustling around, and a tad brusque, so we never got our water until reminding him about half an hour later. We ordered all of our food, including appetizers through the sushi chef. - fake crab should NEVER be served at any respectable sushi bar, ESPECIALLY on the sashimi plate! sashimi = raw fish, at least in my book. - we wanted to order sake but apparently they don't serve it outside the bar. Liquor license issues? in any case, annoying. Bottom line, if there's no place else to go for sushi in the neighborhood, it's passable, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Sorry folks.

Decided to try this place because of a gift certificate that was given to me. We showed up at 4, the 'open' sign was lit and was greeted immediately with a "WE DON'T OPEN UNTIL 4:30". Ok, so we left and ran an errand. Came back and entered at 4:28. "WE DON'T OPEN UNTIL 4:30" Really, 2 minutes? We went outside and came back in to a very friendly, smiley hostess who greeted us and asked if we were doing hibachi or sushi. We said "hibachi". She grabbed 2 menus and was immediately yelled at by who I assumed was the manager. Not just once but 3 times. The manager was frustrated because she was grabbing the wrong menu. We got seated, at the end of the table and we were obviously going to be the only 2 people sitting at this table usually fit for 10. We wondered if we could move and when our chef came out- he advised us to move. Our Chef, Chris (I believe was his name) is the ONLY reason I didn't rate this establishment 1 star. The chefs at hibachi grills are usually hit or miss, but he was good. He educated us, made us laugh and prepared our order perfectly. Personally, I wouldn't eat at this particular location again because of our first impression when we walked in (both times). But I'd recommend a different location because the food was delicious.

Great rolls. When at hibachi beware of the sake shots...they are potent. For sushi and esp for sushi in the NW suburbs this place is the shiz nit. Hibachi is really fun and actually quite reasonable in price. Tons and tons of food. 2 people could easily share one hibachi plate and depending on the appetites of the 2 could possibly take some home. The sushi is actually quite impressive. Nigiri slices could be a little thicker but the price is reasonable and the fish is good. Love the rolls. Again reasonably priced and creative. Love creative rolls. If I can't afford/make it downtown for sushi this is def. a great alternative to a super swanky super expensive place. Don't hate on the CR. Give this place a try. You won't be sorry.

I've been to four different "chef grills at the table" places over the years, and this one was not the best. It is a fun time for the kids. They had a paper mâché head they let people wear for some reason having to do with birthdays (or something). I hate to think of how many drunks and people with head lice must've had it on before my party. Last time I was there, Ichi Ban was a lot better, and it can't be much more expensive.

The only complaint that I can muster is that they don't have a ton of waiting room when they're busy; it was literally wall to wall people when we walked in (and it was too cold to wait outside). It was a typical hibachi menu.....soup and salad to start followed by fried rice and the main course. We ordered some veggie sushi and some vegetable dumplings as well and both were great. The soup and salad were along the lines of other hibachi grills (broth based soup and small salad with a creamy dressing) but for some reason both tasted much better than I've had at similar restaurants. The fried rice and main course (veggie hibachi for me) were both excellent as well. Our chef was amusing (as were other chefs around us) with some new tricks that I haven't seen before. Our waitress was very attentive and was doing her best to keep up with the crowd. Overall it was a great experience and I will be going back again soon!

I would like to point out that many of the people that have reviwed Osaka at this location mistakenly placed their review under the other Coon Rapids location that is located at 77 85th Ave NW. Both locations are excelent choices but have a slight personal preference for the Riverdale Blvd location. I never have been one to dine out much but have doing much more of it over the past 6 months and one thing I am learning is just how important it is to the dining experence for a restaurant to have a good and friendly staff. Both of the Coon Rapids locations do an excelent job of making me feel wecome. The food is an excelent value and is prepared quite well even though it falls a little short of my expectations when comparing it to Japanese food I have eaten elswhere, especially my favorite place on the West Coast.

I so wanted this place to have good sushi, since the Coon Rapids location is close to the new house. Unfortunately it was just a little sub-par. The fish on my nigiri orders was fresh-tasting enough, but the Winter Roll tasted pre-made and was noticeably inferior in flavor and size to the same roll at Fuji Ya. Also disappointing was their inability to make 'spicy mayo' with spice. On top of that, I can't believe they get ten bucks for a cheap hot sake out in these parts. I didn't try the hibachi grill, but after seeing and hearing part of the obnoxious, recorded birthday song and light show, I won't be back without a group of children or fans of disco.

We got the Sumo Roll and it was HUGE... that alone will definately feed two people. As far as the teppnayaki grill area, it's just like every other restaurant like this.

I've eaten here at the hibachi/teppenyaki side once, and the sushi side at least 3 times. And we've only lived in Coon Rapids for a month and a half so that should tell you something! It's the only sushi option I know of (so far) in the northern suburbs, and it is really really good. They have nice service, and make beautiful presentations. The food and fish is always high quality and delicious, and they have some fun and unique special rolls. (We recommend Spicy Girl and Winter Roll.) The hibachi was great too - good food and a fun show, which is what you're looking for of course. Drinks I've tried have been good (Japanese Sunflower was one I think?) and they have a large sake selection. The price is average to above-average, but come on, you don't want discount sushi in MInnesota anyway. And it depends on what you order, of course. I thought the hibachi prices were less than Ichiban, for example, and seemed to have a similar, if not larger, amount of food. My husband likes eating lots of large specialty rolls, so our sushi bill is probably not a good representation. The only downside is I wish they had more seating that was just sushi. Right now there is a bar, and then about 6 booths. Seems like every time I go here, it is more crowded, so more sushi-only seating would be nice.
